River View Commons Principals Welcome Morgan Stanley to the Newly Renovated Downtown Salisbury Landmark
SALISBURY, MD – March 16, 2016 – Gillis Gilkerson, one of the most stable and trusted general contracting and construction management firms on Delmarva, welcomes Morgan Stanley to River View Commons located at 150 West Market Street, Salisbury, Maryland. Morgan Stanley is scheduled to move in the weekend of March 18th and take over the third floor.
“To have a national tenant like Morgan Stanley fill an entire floor of the new building shows the company’s level of commitment to the downtown community, said Dwight Miller, president, Gillis Gilkerson. “With the rebirth of the old Feldman’s building, comes new opportunities and ways to improve the quality of life where we live and work.”
Acorn Market will share space on the first floor with Angello’s Unique Gifts with plans to move in late spring and Gillis Gilkerson will relocate its offices to the second floor of River View Commons late fall 2016.
River View Commons, LLC principals, Dwight Miller, Palmer Gillis and J.B. Barnes thank the team at Becker Morgan for their architectural services during the design phase of the renovation and Brad Gillis, CCIM of SVN, for his commercial real estate expertise in leasing the building space.
“We also couldn’t have done this without the support from the City of Salisbury,” added Miller. “We appreciate how open and helpful the city administration has been with the revitalization of “what was once an eye sore” thereby allowing us to develop a welcoming facility for those coming into our city.”
Gillis Gilkerson broke ground in September, 2014 initially demolishing 60,000 square feet of unusable structure, leaving the main Historical structure, then started the replacement of the roof and reinforce the walls of the 15,000 square foot original structure. The initial phase of construction included the renovation of the existing facility and the addition of stair towers, an elevator and a common space, allowing for a total of 20,000 square feet.
History in the making…
- In 1888, the building was situated on 20,000 square feet of land, and was originally built as a two-story warehouse.
- The space was once a trading spot for wholesale grocer B.L. Gillis, Palmer Gillis’ uncle from five generations past.
- The building was expanded to three stories and in the 1920’s the red brick façade was changed to a Tudor Revival style.
- Allison A. Gillis bought the property in May 1890 and owned it until he died in 1913. His two daughters inherited it and retained the title to the property until 1923.
- In 1923, the property was transferred to Samuel and William Feldman and was developed into Feldman’s Brothers furniture business. By the mid-1930s, it was well-known as one of the largest furniture stores in the region.
