Thomas H. Draper Media Center On Track for Completion
Masonry work is wrapping up and the Gillis Gilkerson team is preparing to build a barrel roof on the two-story Thomas H. Draper Media Center in Milton, Delaware. The 600 square foot open-air lobby and reception area is designed to complement the current facility, which will house the newly acquired WRDE, Telemundo Delmarva, Loblolly LLC, WBOC’s Sussex County bureau and the company’s digital media division. The building will be filled with artifacts from Mr. Draper’s life and legacy.
“I was pleased Gillis Gilkerson came in with the best price for the job after putting it out to bid,” said Mr. John Hopkins, vice president & general manager, Loblolly, LLC. “It was a pleasure working with them on the news complex and now the lobby addition. They bring professionalism and quality to every job. Tom always wanted the Milton location to be vibrant and busy, a hub of activity. It’s happening now.”
Tom Draper was killed in a bicycle accident in September 2017, outside Milford, Delaware just days before he was to celebrate his 50th anniversary in broadcasting. Company representatives, family and dignitaries honored Mr. Draper’s life on the anniversary of the launch of WBOC-TV in 1954 with a groundbreaking for the new addition to the media center.
Known for his philanthropic spirit, Tom Draper spent his career giving back to local communities and investing in new business development. He helped facilitate the development of the former Draper-King Cole Industrial site into Cannery Village and played a role in relocating and expanding the Dogfish Head brewery in Milton.
