Gillis Gilkerson Completes Artifact Installation at Cambridge Lighthouse
SALISBURY, MD – May 26, 2015 – Gillis Gilkerson, one of the most stable and trusted general contracting and construction management firms on Delmarva, announced the completion of artifact installation at the Cambridge Lighthouse in Cambridge, Maryland.
Gillis Gilkerson originally built the lighthouse in 2012 as a new construction for the Choptank River Lighthouse Society. Gillis Gilkerson responded to a request for proposals on additional work for the installation of historic (restored) artifacts collected from lighthouses across the country. The team was hired to install three different relics unique to the Cambridge Lighthouse.
Gillis installed a fog bell and assembled the striker mechanism – the pulley activated arm that strikes the bell. They also rebuilt a dormer to enclose the bell in the lighthouse. Gillis Gilkerson also positioned a 23 foot boat from Ruark’s Boat Works to hang from the lighthouse connected to a ramp for boaters to gain access to the tower. Block and tackle kits were installed as décor to make it look as though they were holding the boat up in position.
“This project was unique in that we were given the opportunity to enhance a structure we originally built by restoring its history through the installation of lighthouse artifacts provided by the U.S. Coast Guard,” said Dwight Miller, president, Gillis Gilkerson. “The society had a vision for what the lighthouse should be. We were happy we could help bring that vision to life.”
“Our interest was to find a company who could maintain the historic accuracy of the artifact installation, while being code compliant with confidence in the durability of the job done,” said Jackie Noller, interim vice president, Choptank River Lighthouse Society. “Gillis Gilkerson met all three requirements and got the job done. We were very demanding from the beginning. We knew what we wanted and the Gillis team, led by Don Murray, was patient with us and delivered everything we wanted. It has been a very positive experience.”
